Is it bad to have a lot of money?
God uses the Bible to give us some very strong warnings about money. There are two commandments that remind us not to idolize the things that money can buy – through coveting and stealing. The Bible also advises that “the love of money is the root of all evil”. (I Timothy 6:10 [KJV])
Together, these verses remind us to love God, as the Giver of all good things. We never want to make the mistake of worshiping the gifts that God gives us.
Even though the Bible warns against falling in love with money, it doesn’t say that it is wrong to have wealth. Instead, the Bible gives examples of people who had a Godly attitude toward money.
Here are Bible examples of people who didn’t allow money to come between them and God. Many of these individuals are praised for serving God with their actions and wealth.
- Job was a wealthy cattle owner who loved God so much that he refused to fault God when his children and wealth were tragically lost – all in the same day.
- Abraham was a wealthy cattle owner that God chose to become the father of the Hebrew nation.
- Boaz was a wealthy farmer who was used by God to redeem Ruth and establish the family tree leading to King David and Jesus Christ.
- The Proverbs 31 woman was a God-honoring weaver and seamstress, who used her wealth and influence to joyfully serve her community.
- Esther chose not to trust her position as queen of Persia to save her from Haman’s death decree. She asked God to give her favor with the king, so she could request that she and her people be spared.
- Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthy disciple of Christ, who used his own new tomb to bury Jesus after His death on the cross…
